Soil Portraits
I am enthusiastic about experimenting with methods for surfacing and provoking reflection on our relationship to soil. I often find myself in contact with dirt. This project involved tinkering with soil chromatography, a scientific process for measuring soil health, which I used artistically. It became a collaboration with dirt to reveal unique images, “soil portraits”.
This developed into a socially engaged project when I invited gardeners from my local community to participate; fostering a dialogue around our memories and associations with soil through conversation and collectively making soil portraits with their collected soil samples.
