Community Herb Garden
When I arrived in Tangier I began volunteering in Darna’s restaurant, in the kitchen on their busiest day—Friday couscous day. This helped me orient to a new context and begin the process of connecting with the women there. I was touched by their inherent hospitality and desire to make the most of the resources they had.
My classmate Rosa Smits and I noticed there was plenty of space on the rooftop to create a small herb garden. We proposed this project to the staff of Darna and were met with enthusiasm; they appreciated the circularity the garden offered. It became a beautiful process; rooted in our shared interest in re-using and transforming “wasted” materials. The plant beds were thoughtfully crafted from found materials at Darna's Pedagogical Farm by their talented welders.
This project required many hands; welding, painting, digging, lifting all the supplies, and more. Through this process, We've come to experience Darna's strength both in collaboration and hospitality. We are grateful to participate in an initiative that will continue to grow and that contributes to Darna’s ethos of hospitality.
